Autism Month Announcement!

A poem by Marty Murphy

Hell.  Allow me to introduce myself to you.  My name is autism.  Perhaps you know me or know of me.  I am a condition, “disorder”, that affects many people.  I strike at will, when and where I want.  Unlike Downs Syndrome or other birth “disorder”, I leave no marks on those I strike.  In fact, I prided myself on the ability to infiltrate a child’s life, while leaving him or her strikingly handsome.  Many people may not even know I am there.  They blame the child for what I cause him or her to do.  I am autism and I do as I please.

Please join us for Lollipop Wednesday.   Wear blue to support autism and come to the front foyer and received a lollipop.  Remember you must be wearing blue.  See you then!  R. Michael

Autism Month Announcement!  Temple Grandin!  The Colorado State University calls her “the most accomplished and well known adult with autism in the world.”  Temple Grandin is an American professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University, world-renowned autism spokesperson and consultant to the livestock industry on animal behaviour.  Dr. Grandin didn’t talk until she was three and a half years old, communicating her frustration instead by screaming, peeping and humming.  In 1950, she was diagnosed with autism and her parents were told she would be institutionalized.  She tells her story of “groping her way from the far side of darkness” in her book “Emergence:  Labeled Autistic”, a book which stunned the world because, until its publication, most professionals and parent assumed that an autism diagnosis was virtually a death sentence to achievement or productivity in life.  R. Michael
