Although not everyone will experience a mental illness in their lifetime, a fifth of Canadians will, and learning how to help them is incredibly important.  Learn more about the illness and listen to your friend, have a better understanding of their experiences, then ask what you can do to help.  Recovery takes time and effort.  It means a lot when you recognize your friend’s work towards wellness, regardless of the outcome you are there for the people you care about. T. Earthquake Aftermath in Nepal

It has been difficult to hear the reports and see the images emerging out of Nepal following the powerful earthquake that devastated the South Asian country over the past week. Sadly, the death toll continues to rise each day, thousands have been left injured and an estimated 8.1 million people are in desperate need of humanitarian assistance: food, shelter, primary medical care and clean water.

The death and destruction caused by the earthquake is not confined to this distant part of the world. Family, friends and relatives of a number of people in our city – and in our schools – are lost or missing halfway around the globe.

To those who have lost loved ones or who are still anxiously awaiting word of their safety, the Toronto District School Board extends its deepest condolences.  Our collective thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

Should students need support with dealing with this tragedy, our guidance and support team are available to assist. Please do not hesitate to visit them.

Parents/guardians please see the attached letter which indicates how you can assist with the tdsbCARES: Nepal Region Earthquake Relief.

Denise Martins, Principal, Danforth CTI

_______________________________________________________________

Dear Parent/Guardian,

At Danforth CTI, we are participating in the tdsbCARES: Nepal Region Earthquake Relief fundraising efforts to support the Canadian Red Cross as they provide assistance to the people in Nepal following the powerful earthquake that recently devastated parts of the country. Our school is planning [insert information about planned activities, events, date, time, etc.].

In addition, [name of school] will be collecting donations of cash or cheques, which will be forwarded through the TDSB to the Canadian Red Cross. The charity will issue tax receipts for all online donations as well donations via cheque (minimum value of $20). The TDSB fundraising appeal will run until May 25th. The federal government has announced that they will match all eligible donations made by that date.

For more information or to make a donation online, please visit the TDSB website at www.tdsb.on.ca and click on the Earthquake Relief banner.

With millions of people affected by the earthquake, the need is great. With that in mind, we are asking students, staff, parents and our school community to do what they can. No gift is too small or insignificant. Your donations are much appreciated.

Thank you for your support,

Denise Martins, Principal of Danforth Collegiate and Technical Institute
